MERRIWELL / COOMBA FALLS

So we head to a place in Merriwell not far from the Bunya Mountains where the Coomba Falls are.

Saw this interesting little fellow....

A beautiful spot

Water gushes down these falls in winter and is a lovely spot to swim in summer for the locals

We thought this would be a good spot to play another one of my songs.

It's called 'Stupey' ;)

Karen got in the act as well hahahaha she didn't think I would put it on the blog!

Kazza finding Bam Bam, mission impossible!

Here we go 2,3,...ahhh 1 (in joke)

Here I practise the art of levitation.

Stunning!

Now that tree's on a bender!

Grass trees are extremely slow growing. Did you know that in poor bush soil the trunk will grow approx 9mm per year? They take up to 10 years to start forming a trunk, and a tree with a 1 metre long trunk could be 100 years old!

That means these grass trees are pretty old!

So with that it's time to say goodbye to this special place and

Time to hit the road!

NANANGO / BUNYA MOUNTAINS

So we had to get a few things from a place called Kingaroy and decided to camp for a night at a nice little town about 25km south in Nanango before heading into the mountains

As we were setting up camp we met a really nice young couple that had come across a kangaroo that had been hit and killed on the road.  Unfortunately the kangaroo had a joey in it's pouch, but fortunately this lovely couple decided to rescue the joey which would have perished in the wild.

and with some help from the local Vet this little fellas future is looking a lot brighter than what it would have been.  Apparently little joey bounces around after the young lady, who is now mum:)
(Ps sorry we didn't catch your names but well done anyway :0))

Nanango and the surrounding areas is deep in rich history

As with many areas in Australia when a significant coal deposit is found there is inevitably a mine and a power station near the mine established.  This is a drag line bucket called 'Hanibal's Bucket' and it was used by a massive crane to lift massive amounts of coal for transportation to the adjoining power station.

Really impressive stuff and without becoming too political, as just one coal mine and respective power station in the world, it's any wonder why we're chocking the planet's atmosphere with all the emissions.  Yeah, yeah, yeah I can hear you, I like power too so I'm as much to blame!  What do you do?????????????

Never the less, impressive stuff anyways

One small step for man.....

One giant leap for Mary Poppins,

Mary who? Mary Karen or is Karen perhaps just Merry?  Karen will you Mary me?

The next day we headed to the Bunya Mountains to check out the sub tropical rain forest and as it was there was we came across a fair and saw this wonderful display of Morris Minor cars.

My favourite

We head into the forest

This is the first rain forest I have ever been to and the scenery did not disappoint!

This is a giant is called a giant stinging tree.  As per the next picture you will read that the leaves can be quite dangerous to humans and touching them is to be avoided at all costs.  Even dried leaf specimens collected over 100 years ago can amazingly still cause pain to humans.

Needless to say we stayed well away!

Much of the jungle has creeping vines

Whilst there might be hidden dangers in the forest it is absolutely spectacular to see

This is a giant Bunya Pine and the aborigines used to climb these trees to collect the pine nuts from the top of the tree.

You don't want to stand for too long under theses giants as the cone nuts can weigh up to 10kg and would give you a pretty nasty headache if one were to hit you!

Throughout the forest you can see these crows nest plants growing on the sides of certain trees

Spectacular!

Run Karen run!

Ello, ello, ello!

At this time of the year water flow is reduced to a trickle, however it won't be long before the winter rains will bring a torrent!

When storms bring heavy rain this decorative plant on the wall of the waterfall will be washed away, only to grow again

On top of the world!

A wondrous thing!

Umm don't think I want to eat these eh!

This massive tree is the White Booyong

You really feel quite small amongst these giants!

Wow! Now that's some stairway to heaven!

This particular walk through the forest was a 4km trek and there are several treks to take.  One is 10kms

What the!  We think the look says it all hahahaha!

Spaghetti!

Some monster from outta space just landed

And with that it was time to head back to camp as tomorrow we head off to a place in Merriwell to catch the Coomba Falls so yes Karen that's right......

It's time to hit the road!
