THE ROCK

We drove around 2 hours north of the Victorian Alpines to cross the border into New South Wales.  We came across a beautiful township called The Rock.  What a cool name eh!

In almost every country town we have visited there is a memorial to the military past of both world wars.  The town of 'The Rock' is no different

The name comes from the rock in the background and at certain angles can be seen in the shape of a lion.  It is therefore known as the Crouching Lion

We were lucky enough to have camped at the home of The Rock (Crows) football club and the very next day way the first game of the season, which happend to be the replay of last years grand finalists.  Needless to say it was a very physical and entertaining match!

The game was fast...

and it was furious...

it was played with skill....

and it was played with such care for each other that this Hawkes player wanted to make sure that his knee matched the temple on his opponents head.  Now that's what I call 'Good old country hospitality!'

The game went right down to the wire...

and with only 30 seconds on the clock....

this game finished in a draw!!!

But The Rock isn't all about football, although some of the locals would argue that point...

We decided to climb 'The Rock' which is pictured in the background of the first photo on this page...

The rock formation had some striking colours

the climb is higher that it seems...

You can see in the distance the green of the football oval where we watched the match..

a part of the 'Crouching Lion'

'The Rock' provided some interesting rock formations....

and just as interesting was this little fella in a cave not far off the trail.  It was a sleeping Wombat.  They spend most of the day sleeping and come out at night.

and after an eventful stay at 'The Rock' it was time to hit the road!
